The ultimate virtual battle for eSailGP glory
Introducing eSailGP - the official eSailing game of SailGP, the world's premier sail racing league. The world’s fastest virtual sail racing, eSailGP offers fans the chance to test their skills piloting the world’s fastest sail race boats in a virtual environment - which includes an opportunity to take on the world-class SailGP athletes in eF50s.
Launched in partnership with Virtual Regatta and World Sailing, the inaugural competition in 2020 featured seven qualification events, with each respective winner – plus an additional wild-card berth for a youth player – clinching a spot in the eSailGP Grand Final that was held August 14. More than 146,000 unique players participated and 55,783 individual races took place in the maiden season.
British eSailor Mike O’Donovan - known as Déjà Vu - emerged the season champion, overtaking pre-race favorite Joan Cardona, a member of the Spain SailGP Team. O’Donovan’s win secured him a place in the eSailing World Championship final and a ride on a real-life F50. The top eight from each eSailGP Qualifier also qualified for the eSailing World Championship Final Playoffs.
Cardona, the Spain SailGP Team’s youngest member, went on to win the eSailing World Championship final in November, while O’Donovan was third.
The first of two post-season invitationals aired November 7 and featured nine of the best eSailors in the world, representing eight nations. It was won by Bart Lambriex, a Dutch sailor who has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the 49er.
The final invitational event will close out the year on December 12-13, with the show released on December 16, alongside the eSailGP Season 2 format announcement.
