What’s different about SailGP betting?

SailGP betting is fast, tactical, and unpredictable – just like the racing itself. With shifting conditions, high-tech boats, and world-class athletes, no two races are the same.

All teams race in identical 50-foot foiling catamarans. To adapt to various wind and weather conditions, the F50 catamarans are equipped to sail with three different wing sizes, – the 18m high air wing, the 24m all purpose wing and the 29m low air wing, as well as interchangeable daggerboards and rudders. All equipment is decided by Race Control, so no team has an equipment advantage. This makes betting on SailGP more about team skill than equipment – much like handicap horse racing, where the field is levelled to give every entrant an equal shot at winning. This makes for great racing and offers a unique opportunity for betting, as every team has the same opportunity to win!

SailGP’s open source data allows teams to analyse each others’ performances to see what they are doing differently. For astute bettors, this creates opportunities to beat the bookies.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is sailing betting legal?

Yes – but only if you’re using a licensed platform in your region. Regulations differ by country, so always check your local laws and ensure your chosen sportsbook accepts bettors from your location.

  2. What’s the best bet for beginners?

SailGP is the perfect starting point for bettors new to the sport. With its fast-paced format, standardized F50 catamarans, and clear scoring system, it’s easy to follow. Real-time data, consistent team line-ups, and frequent events throughout the season make it accessible and engaging for newcomers.

The simplest bet is on the team to “win the race.” With seven fleet races per weekend, simply place your bets before the race starts and watch the action unfold over the next ten minutes.

  3. How often does the favorite win the Final of a Grand Prix?

Triple SailGP champion Australia is often touted as the league’s favorite and regularly qualifies for the Final top on fleet race points. However, in Season 4, the Aussies only won one Final out of the nine they qualified for, showing that there are plenty of other teams capable of causing an upset.

  4. How often does the favorite qualify for the final of a Grand Prix?

In Season 4, Australia qualified for eight Finals, while New Zealand qualified for seven. Only one of the 12 event Finals didn’t feature either Australia or New Zealand. Across the season, eight of the season’s 10 teams qualified for an event Final. So while Australia and New Zealand are great bets to qualify for the event Final, there is often value in picking the longer odds runners to qualify for a bigger payout. Watching the event live and listening to the expert commentators is a good way to identify your finalists.

  5. What factors impact the result of a SailGP race?

Crew changes: Teams race in identical F50s – only the crew is different. Crew changes, especially those involving the driver, flight controller, wing trimmer, can have a big impact on the probability of a team winning the race.

Fly time percentage: The fly time percentage is the amount of time an F50 spends on the foils. Another important metric is the average ride height – flying high reduces the F50’s drag in the water, but if a team flies too high, it will lose control and nosedive. The more time an F50 spends on the foils, the less the drag and higher the speed, meaning the more likely it is for that team to win. The live SailGP commentary includes live foiling data and expert opinion to help you spot the best teams.

Wind: It should come as no surprise that the wind has a huge impact in SailGP racing. There are teams which fare better in light winds, medium winds and high winds, the latter of which results in fast and furious racing action. In light winds, it’s all about which team can get up on the foils the fastest and nail foiling maneuvers to minimise speed loss. In high winds, it’s all about which teams can push the boats the hardest whilst retaining control.

Tactics: Each SailGP racecourse includes a gate at each end. Teams can choose either the left or right turn as they approach the gates – guessing which side of the course promises more wind. Each crew has a strategist on board and a coach on shore who can advise the best turn to go for. Each boat assesses the wind, estimates the number of manoeuvres and the distance that needs to be traveled. It means that there are multiple routes to the finish line and a boat with the lowest average speed can still win if it sails a shorter distance and makes fewer manoeuvres.

Listen out for the live commentary to hear which side of the course has the strongest wind – there are often strong clues for bettors to take advantage of.
