ROCKWOOL Germany Sail Grand Prix 2026 Betting Preview: Great Chance to Back Los Gallos at Big Odds
Here’s your recap on what happened at the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix three weeks ago, an update on the latest Championship standings and odds and the latest prices ahead of the action here at the ROCKWOOL Germany Sail Grand Prix, where Los Gallos are surprisingly big odds to make it three in a row.
Los Gallos the Big Movers After the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix
A reminder that the most recent event on the Rolex SailGP Championship calendar, the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix, saw Los Gallos SailGP Team take the maximum 10 points, with the Artemis SailGP Team chasing them home in second to claim nine, while the NorthStar SailGP Team defied the odds in making the final, eventually ending up in third.
Though the Explora Swiss Team didn’t make the podium they still made the final, finishing with seven points.
Los Gallos’ win was significant for two main reasons. Those 10 points mean they’re now on 54 for the season and have given them some breathing room from those chasing them.
Artemis are now seven points behind them in the standings, with the U.S SailGP Team a further point behind the Swedes.
The Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team, who disappointingly picked up zero points in their home event, and for the second successive event after the same thing happened at the Canada Sail Grand Prix, are the other big movers, but in the opposite direction, the one they didn’t want to be going in. They are now just fifth.
Having led the Championship at one stage this season, they’re now in genuine danger of missing out on a Top 3 finish in it, let alone winning it.
Two Clear Favorites For the Championship
All of the above explains the latest odds for the Championship: Los Gallos are 2.85, Artemis are 6.25, the Americans are 8.33, and the Brits are 10.0.
But of course, there’s one team we haven’t mentioned yet. The Bonds Flying Roos SailGP Team are still top of the standings on 66 points, 12 clear of Los Gallos, and the 2.38 favorites to go and win the whole thing.
Deserved favorites, yes, but after that incredible three-peat was completed a few weeks ago, they’ve now gone back-to-back events without a podium finish, a rarity for them.
In-Form Los Gallos Look a Big Price for a Three-Peat
The second reason Los Gallos’ win was so significant is that it was their second in a row, having already tasted success in Canada.
That makes them the form team in the competition, so it’s a bit of a surprise to see them as big as 8.33 to win here at the ROCKWOOL Germany Sail Grand Prix.
Winning any event in SailGP is hard enough; doing so twice in a row is even more so, and winning three in a row is almost unheard of. But those two wins prove they’re racing well, confidently, and working well as a unit, so you have to see that it looks like a big price on Los Gallos.
What’s perhaps even more surprising is that it’s the same price as the ROCKWOOL Racing SailGP Team, who are down in 11th in the Championship standings and only finished ninth last time out. They also finished just seventh in last year’s event here in Sassnitz, so you’d have to say those odds look very much on the short side.
At exactly the same odds of 8.33, you can back the NorthStar SailGP Team, who, as we know, at least finished third last time out, an indication that they arrive here in good form.
So if those are the third favorites, then who’s ahead of them in the betting?
Bonds Flying Roos Favorites Despite Drop in Form
The Bonds Flying Roos are still the team to beat here at odds of 6.25 despite consecutive under-par performances in the last two events. They finished second here last year.
Meanwhile, the bookies are showing plenty of respect towards the Black Foils SailGP Team, who missed so many events this season as a result of a badly damaged F50.
They did, however, secure respectable back-to-back fifth-placed finishes since returning to the action, so the odds-compilers feel this may just be the event where they’re about to pounce.
And as a good reflection of the struggles that Emirates GBR are currently experiencing, they’re 10.0 to win here in Germany, whereas they’re normally among the two or three favorites. Dylan Fletcher and his crew were third here last season.
Finally, a word on last year’s champions here in Germany. DS Automobiles Team France won it. But they don’t arrive here in the greatest of form, having finished eighth and tenth in their last two events, so you can see why they’re 10.0 to defend their title here on the Baltic.
Why Are the Favorites At Bigger Odds Than Before?
Those who have been following the betting side of things throughout the season may have noticed that the odds on the favorites have been considerably bigger ahead of the last two events.
For example, the Aussies are 6.25 here, up from around 2.4 or 2.6 in some of the earlier events.
That’s because the format changed to group racing two events ago, where the fleet is split into two groups, with the top two from each group progressing to Sunday’s Final.
That’s seen as making racing more unpredictable and therefore tougher to make the final and, of course, once you get there, you have an extra boat to beat. Previously, the final was contested by three teams rather than four.
As it happens, Los Gallos won both times since group racing was introduced, but the bookies still believe the revised format is going to lead to more unpredictable results, such as how the Aussies missed out on the last two podiums.
We’ll have to wait and see.
