We know from our earlier recap of the Rolex SailGP Championship how tight things are at the top of the Championship Standings.
And going into this week’s event, the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix in Geneva, the Sportsbooks are predicting another tight tussle out on the water, which is why they’re struggling to split the same three who are leading the competition when it comes to the odds of winning in Switzerland.
Bookies Paying the Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team Plenty of Respect
The BONDS Flying Roos SailGP Team is no longer leading the Championship. They’re currently third in the overall standings at the moment, but not making the top three at the ROCKWOOL France Sail Grand Prix last week isn’t going to convince the bookies they’ve lost any of their speed, ability to work as a team, or winning mentality. That’s why the odds-compilers have installed them as the favorites to win the Event in Geneva this week at 4.0.
But if the BONDS Flying Roos have been forgiven for what happened in Saint-Tropez, the same bookmakers are showing plenty of respect to the team that did make the most of racing in France, winning the Event and moving into second place in the standings: Emirates Great Britain. They’re the second favorites at 4.35 to triumph in Switzerland this weekend, somewhat surprisingly ahead of the Black Foils SailGP Team, who are leading the Championship and are priced up at 4.65 to triumph on Lake Geneva.
Next up is the Los Gallos SailGP Team at odds of 7.41, with the France SailGP Team completing the top five in the betting, at odds of 9.52.
Switzerland SailGP Team Looking To Be the First Home Winners of the 2025 Season
The 2025 season has been an interesting one so far in that we’re yet to have a home winner.
Looking to change all that is the Switzerland SailGP Team, who have made no secret of how much they’re looking forward to competing on home water and in front of their adoring fans.
Driver Seb Schneiter says it marks the fulfilment of a long-term ambition.
“It was always a goal of our team to bring an event to Switzerland,” he said. “Every team wants a home event, but Geneva was extra challenging in terms of logistics, organising an event on the lake in such a tight space. So having it all come together now is huge.”
And there’s a bigger picture here for the Swiss team than just performing well across the weekend, getting some points on the board, and making up for the disappointment of a last-place finish in Saint-Tropez.
“Nothing like SailGP has ever come here before,” he said. “It’s going to be the biggest event of the year, not just for sailors, but for everyone in this city who loves sport.”
Why the Odds Are Stacked Against the Swiss
Schneiter admitted that if there was just one event his team would love to win during the 2025 season, it’s this one.
“We’re not realistically fighting for the Season Grand Final in Abu Dhabi, so Geneva feels more important than the others.”
That said, it’s one thing wanting to finish on the podium, or better, come Sunday afternoon, but it’s quite a different thing to actually achieve that.
The overall standings are the fairest reflection of the fact that the Swiss haven’t had the season they would have liked. But they wouldn’t be competing at this level unless they had the skills and experience to pick up some good results across the course of the season and this weekend might just be a good opportunity to do just that.
It won’t be easy with odds of 28.57 to win the Event and a price of 11.76 just to make the Final, but home support can go a long way in this sport, and as we know, anything can happen out there on the water. Just look at Red Bull Italy and Mubadala Brazil last week.
Unsurprisingly, it’s the same three who lead the Championship who are the shortest prices to make the Final this weekend with the BONDS Flying Roos 1.54, Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team 1.61, and the Black Foils SailGP Team on offer at 1.65.
Very Different Conditions But Same Favorites to Win Race 1
We’re on fresh water this weekend at Lake Geneva for the first time this season, with the added bonus of spectators at the sold-out event able to see the breathtaking snow-capped Alps in the background. But that’s not the only unique feature in play here, with the challenges of racing in such close spaces testing the teams to the full.
As Schneiter put it:
“This will be the first time we’ve raced on such close waters. The winds will be unstable, but that makes for exciting racing with a lot of overtakes and opportunities. And of course, in fresh water we don’t even need to wash the boats each day!”
But irrespective of conditions, it’s the same three who are fancied by the bookies to win the Event’s Fleet Race 1. It’s 3.85 that the Australians win the opener, 4.17 on GBR, and 4.4 on New Zealand.
