Black Foils SailGP Team Masterclass Hands Them Victory in The Opener
It was first blood for the Black Foils SailGP Team on Saturday, winning Fleet Race 1 at the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix in Geneva.
That was thanks to an absolute racing masterclass from their driver, Pete Burling, timing the start to perfection, foiling before anyone else managed to, and making the most of having all the room in the world at the head of the fleet, while everyone else was jostling for position behind them.
In winning Race 1, the Kiwis somewhat upset the odds as they were only third-favourites at 4.4 to win the opener, with the BONDS Flying Roos SailGP Team and the Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team shorter than them, before the race went off.
Elsewhere, Emirates GBR took third as they continued to show remarkable consistency after that win at the ROCKWOOL France Sail Grand Prix last week, while the Danish ROCKWOOL Racing SailGP Team got nine valuable points with an impressive runner-up spot.
There was a far worse outcome for Taylor Canfield and the United States SailGP Team, who were disqualified at the start for barging on the start line.
Switzerland SailGP Team Secure Excellent Runner-Up Spot in Race 2 But Australians Take It
Ahead of this Event in Geneva, we highlighted the desire of Driver Seb Schneiter and his Switzerland SailGP Team to put in a strong performance on home waters. And that’s exactly what Schneiter and his team did, taking second in Race 2.
That was one place ahead of Emirates GBR, who secured yet another podium finish.
But, the race win went to the BONDS Flying Roos SailGP Team, in less windy conditions, that saw the whole fleet off the foils.
Aussie driver Tom Slingby showcased all his skills, racing right to the boundary and pulling off the better tack, never giving up the lead after that.
It was no more than Slingby deserved after a superb comeback in Race 1, going from last to fourth to secure some priceless points in the opener.
As SailGP commentator Stevie Morrison put it at the end of that first race: “(Tom Slingby) will be the happiest man in the fleet”.
Start to Finish Dominance From Quentin Delapierre In the Day’s Final Race
Getting ahead of the fleet at the start of the race is halfway to winning it. Getting so far ahead that your main concern is how to go about lapping the rest of the boats out there, means you really should win it.
And that’s precisely what happened with Quentin Delapierre and his France SailGP Team, who were first to mark one and never looked back.
The only thing they needed to do after that start was to avoid trouble and they managed that with ease, eventually finishing the race almost a minute ahead of the runners-up.
That was the Canadian NorthStar SailGP Team, who will have been delighted with their work in that race.
Completing the top three were the Australians, with Emirates GBR missing out on a podium finish at the third time of asking, but still finishing fourth, which could still make a big difference by the time this Event is over.
Aussies in Pole Position to Make Sunday’s Final
Emirates GBR’s consistency leaves them in second place going into Sunday’s action, with the Swiss just behind them in third; but it’s the BONDS Flying Roos who lead on 25 points.
As for the Black Foils, they couldn’t have started any better, but fifth place in Race 2 and eleventh in Race 3 means they need to be at their absolute best to make Sunday’s Final. From what we’ve seen of them in Season 2025, we certainly wouldn’t rule them out of doing precisely that.
