We all know that the Rolex SailGP Championship is an exciting, thrilling and unpredictable competition, and that’s just one of many reasons why fans love it.
Any team in the Championship can win any given race, and the event as a whole, but the bookies are still well aware of which teams are the most consistent.
So if you were hoping to find that last season’s top two weren’t going to be the favorites ahead of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix | Auckland starting on Saturday, you’re going to be disappointed.
Usual Suspects Head the Betting
The Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team won the 2025 Rolex SailGP Championship, with the BONDS Flying Roos SailGP Team finishing as runners-up, and those were once again the top two in the inaugural race of this season: the Oracle Perth Sail Grand Prix presented by KPMG, and in the same order, no less.
Emirates GBR is the 3.00 favorite to win the event in Auckland this weekend, with the BONDS Flying Roos hot on their heels at 4.33.
There’s another reason those two are the favorites beyond their remarkable consistency in SailGP over the years and, in particular, their results last season.
When this event was held in Auckland in Round 2 in mid-January 2025 the Aussies won, with the Brits finishing third, so both have form here.
Splitting the two of them last year as the runners-up was Los Gallos SailGP Team, so it’s no surprise that they’re the next in the betting at 7.0.
Why the Big Price On the Black Foils SailGP Team?
It’s worth going back to the first event of the season for some context. As explained in the Five Things to Look Out for in Auckland preview:
“After a horror crash with Switzerland one minute into the Oracle Perth Sail Grand Prix wrote the Black Foils out of the 2026 season opener, the New Zealanders are all but confirmed to be back on the start line for their home event.”
So the Black Foils didn’t get to compete in any of the remaining races in mid-January this year, depriving them of valuable racing time.
And they didn’t make the podium here in Auckland last year, finishing fourth.
So that’s why you’re getting a considerably higher price than usual on them: the bookies are going 8.0 that they win on home waters.
Who’s Your Money On?
We’ve talked you through the most likely winners already: they’re the ones that have been installed as the favorites, of course.
But if you were looking for the betting value, the team who are arguably available at better odds than they should be, then spare a thought for the Artemis SailGP Team at odds of 13.0.
The fact that they were making their SailGP debut in Perth was no barrier to an excellent performance, as they won Races 2 and 3, and finished fourth overall. Those are big odds about an experienced, star-studded team that hit the water running just over a month ago.
DS Automobiles SailGP Team France can be backed at 9.0. They won a race in Perth, secured a further four fleet race podium finishes, and were the team that went into the final on the most points (63), before finishing third overall, so they certainly can’t be discounted either.
Then it’s the ROCKWOOL Racing SailGP Team at 21.0, and the same odds as the NorthStar SailGP Team, that complete the top 8 in the betting.
