The excitement of raceday in Sassnitz has been building for weeks, and day one certainly didn’t disappoint. Germany stormed home in Fleet 1, Emirates GBR shone early doors, and unfortunately, a practice race crash meant that Mubadala Brazil were ruled out before the day had even started.
Race overview: A breakdown of Fleet races 1-4
For those of you who missed out on the action, we’ve broken down the first day in Sassnitz race-by-race.
- Fleet 1: Emirates GBR took an early lead with this one, and Germany by Deutsche Bank found themselves in the middle of the pack. However, by the end of Gate 1, Germany by Deutsche Bank had moved hot on the tail of Emirates GBR, awaiting a slip-up which came just before the end of Fleet 1. In the end, the home team takes the victory, just as we had initially predicted.
- Fleet 2: After finishing ninth in Fleet 1, Spain timed the start incredibly well, flying into the lead. Denmark and France found themselves in second and third, respectively. There was little change on the way to Gate 2; however, we then saw Emirates GBR make a solid push heading into first place. They were followed closely by France and the Black Foils. In the end, Emirates GBR takes the win, and France finishes in second.
- Fleet 3: Emirates GBR finds a gap at the bottom of the line, but Denmark takes the early lead at the start of Fleet 3. Denmark then broke the Sail GP speed record, hitting triple digits (103 km/h) early doors through Gate 1. BONDS Flying Roos then snatched the lead after passing Gate 2, and Los Gallos worked hard to enter the podium positions. It stayed close between Los Gallos, Denmark, and BONDS Flying Roos leading up to Gate 3; however, the BONDS Flying Roos hung on to take the win, and Denmark claimed second.
- Fleet 4: The fourth and final race of the day saw BONDS Flying Roos get off to a solid start, but the Black Foils found a great angle, powering themselves into the lead. Canada (5th) was the first to split to the right ahead of Gate 2; however, Black Foils kept things simple to maintain the lead. There was little movement from here on out, bar a disastrous crash between the US and Emirates GBR. Black Foils take the Fleet 4 win, and the Bonds Flying Roos end up in second.

Final Thoughts: Expect more fun in the sun from Sassnitz on day two
As expected, the first day in Sassnitz has been packed with entertainment. The host nation stormed to victory in Fleet 1, the Sail GP speed record was smashed (103 km/h) by Denmark in Fleet 3, and a crash in Fleet 4 between the USA and Emirates GBR leads to speculation of an early exit from the Germany Sail Grand Prix for Great Britain.
BONDS Flying Roos end the day on top, and that is exactly why they have been tipped to take the first race tomorrow. We also suggest looking at Germany by Deutsche Bank and Black Foils to make the final.
