After an exciting first day in Sassnitz, the odds of winning the Germany Sail Grand Prix have dropped considerably for the USA, Red Bull Italy, and Switzerland. However, for teams like the BONDS Flying Roos and the surprise package, Germany, it is still very much all to play for.
Day one overview: A quick look back at Fleet races 1 – 4
As we already know, the Mubadala Brazil boat team failed to get started after a crash during the practice race. France also endured damage in this new course, but was soon cleared to participate in day one. This is how things played out.
- Fleet 1: Emirates GBR took an early lead, but a critical error in the closing moments saw Erik Heil and the Germany by Deutsche Bank boat crew take the victory
- Fleet 2: Los Gallos started very strong, but by Gate 2, Emirates GBR had stolen the lead and held on for the win
- Fleet 3: A record-breaking moment from Denmark wasn’t quite enough to hold off the BONDS Flying Roos
- Fleet 4: The Black Foils did everything right, starting out strong, sticking to the plan, and taking home the win
Key takeaways: Germany swoop big win, BONDS Flying Roos secure eight-point lead, and Emirates GBR could be out
There was plenty for us to look back on while reviewing the first day in Sassnitz. However, it is these key facts that will have an impact on the race odds to win the Germany Sail Grand Prix.
- Germany stole the first victory in front of the home crowd in Fleet 1, and continued to perform well, finishing the day in 4th place
- Emirates GBR is looking impressive prior to the crash with the USA boat team, and we are awaiting news on whether they will compete on day two
- BONDS Flying Roos sit at the top after day one, securing a huge 8-point lead with 32 points
- Denmark hits record-breaking speeds of 103 km/h in Fleet 3 before claiming second in the same race
- Black Foils turn on the heat in Fleet 4, starting fast and finishing even stronger. Kiwis end the day in second
- Just five points separate Black Foils in second and Emirates GBR in sixth. France (3rd), Germany by Deutsche Bank (4th), and Los Gallos (5th) are all performing well.
Current leaderboard: BONDS Flying Roos put distance between rest of the pack
You’ve seen what we think will prove critical towards the final outcome tomorrow, but there is much to be said about the current leaderboard. Although mathematically it is still doable for the USA, Red Bull Italy, and Switzerland, it would be fair to suggest a three-boat race is off the cards in Sassnitz.
- BONDS Flying Roos: 32 points
- Black Foils: 24 points
- France: 24 points
- Germany by Deutsche Bank: 23 points
- Los Gallos: 22 points
- Emirates GBR: 19 points *
- Rockwool Racing: 18 points
- Northstar: 16 points
- Switzerland: 12 points
- Red Bull Italy: 12 points
- USA: 5 points
- Mubadala Brazil: DNS
* May have to withdraw from Germany Sail GP
Day two predictions: Who makes the three-boat race in Sassnitz?
Pre-race day one, we had Black Foils down to win the Germany Sail GP at 4.35, and both Emirates GBR and BONDS Flying Roos to join them in the three-boat race. However, after an exciting first day, our picks have altered slightly.
Obviously, we have to take into consideration the fact that Emirates GBR may have to withdraw early, and we also can’t ignore that impressive eight-point lead that BONDS Flying Roos have already managed to accrue. With this, we have the following for you.
- BONDS Flying Roos to win the final at 4.62
- Black Foils to win the final at 2.5 (4.35 pre-race day one)
- Germany by Deutsche Bank to make the final 4.26
Final thoughts: All to play for in Sassnitz ahead of day two
Currently, BONDS Flying Roos have too much of an edge going into this one, and could even ease off and reserve a bit of energy prior to the final. That being said, the Black Foils made a huge comeback in Fleet 4, and we suspect they’ll take that energy and momentum with them into the final day. Germany may be a bit of a curveball, but they’ve remained consistent after their Fleet 1 win.
Emirates GBR had also been performing very well, leading up to their unfortunate crash with team USA. It will be interesting to see how this alters the odds when it is confirmed whether they will be competing later today.
