Meet the teamsAustralia SailGP Team
Australia’s crew blends winning pedigree and youthful talent.
Skippered by America’s Cup winning tactician Tom Slingsby, the Australia SailGP team is a fully national crew with young, yet experienced sailors. Slingsby himself is a gold medalist, while wing-trimmer Kyle Langford is a fellow America’s Cup winner and round the world race sailor. Ky Hurst and Sam Newton are all teammates of Slingsby from the last America’s Cup in Bermuda while Hurst is a celebrated Olympic swimmer, surf lifesaver and Ironman. They are joined by Olympian and former youth World Champion, Jason Waterhouse.
Tom Slingsby is an Olympic champion (Laser, 2012), America’s Cup champion (2013) and eight-time world champion. He was the 2010 World Sailor of the Year, then earned Australian Institute of Sport Athlete of the Year honors and received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2012. Shortly after the 2012 Olympics, he joined ORACLE TEAM USA as a strategist, helping mount one of the greatest comebacks in sports when the American team won the Cup in 2013. Slingsby then went on to win the 2016 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and, in 2017, he returned to ORACLE TEAM USA as a tactician and team manager at the America’s Cup in Bermuda.
