Diversity, youth and Bermudian culture are the inspiration behind SailGP’s exclusive Bermuda City Collection, which has been unveiled ahead of Season 3.

Created in collaboration with local artists, the collection was launched to coincide with the kick off of the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix Presented By Hamilton Princess this weekend.

Contemporary illustration studio Pixie Grotto, which was founded by Ken and Lyn Winford in 2018, designed the centrepiece capsule which was inspired by the vibrant sailing culture of Bermuda.

“The idea behind the design was to showcase youth at the forefront,” says studio co-owner Ken Winford. He points to the WASZP athlete at the centre of the design, who is flanked by racing F50s.

“The athlete is a young black Bermudian girl so it’s looking at youth, culture and diversity at the forefront and the possibilities of attaining a position on the larger boats behind.”

Winford offered insight into the creation of Pixie Grotto’s designs, which are inspired by ‘vacation-worthy moments’.

“Lyn and I do our projects together,” he explained. “I do most of the drawing and she makes the magic happen - the filters, the colour, the vibrance and continuity - she makes it look like a pure image.”

Many aspects of the designs, including the people, are started by hand and then scanned into a computer and redrawn.

“We create a mishmash of a mosaic and bring everything together into one collection, making it look as natural as possible,” he said.

He reflected on the popularity of Bermuda’s Season 2 City Collection. “Even now, you go down the street and merchandise from SailGP is still massively worn - there was so much bought here.”

Pixie Grotto’s colourful capsule will adorn the tees, hoodies and tote bags on sale at the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix. The design will also be available to purchase as a wall print. SailGP has also teamed up with TABS to present two co-branded polo t-shirts, which have been embroidered on the island.
