SailGP’s exclusive Copenhagen City Collection has now been released, capturing the close-to-shore racing spectacle of the league’s nine-strong F50 fleet.
Released ahead of the ROCKWOOL Denmark Sail Grand Prix in Copenhagen on August 19/20, the collection was designed by Copenhagen-based artist Jean-Michel Perchet.
The artwork will bedeck T-shirts, hoodies and standalone brings, which can be bought at the on-site Fan Shop or online at shopsailgp.com.
About the artist
Perchet, who is originally from France, wanted to be an illustrator since he was a child but instead found a ‘serious job’ as an adult and worked for many years as a financial controller. But he returned to illustration at the age of 28, and worked across numerous graphic works, from book illustration to satirical cartoons in French newspapers.
Needing some ‘fresh air’, Perchet moved from France to Copenhagen and is now a full time freelance illustrator. His favoured projects are those that involve ‘outdoor scenery’, such as ‘cycling, skiing and hiking’, and which allow him to use his chosen style of complex situations with minimal designs, excessive shapes and lighting.
When it came to designing the Copenhagen City Collection, Perchet was given a brief asking for ‘at least two boats with the scenery of Copenhagen and people on the shore’. The style however was left up to him. “I could do whatever style I liked, which is the best way to work,” he said.
Perchet works digitally and steers clear of producing preliminary hand drawn sketches which, he says, make his work boring. “I think it’s much better to improvise,” he says. “I have enough experience with composition and colours that I can start fresh, from nothing. It’s important to surprise yourself when you’re working.”
