The upcoming Mubadala United States Sail Grand Prix | San Francisco will be unlike any SailGP event that has yet taken place.
The culmination of Season 2, the SailGP Champion will be crowned after two days of racing in the Bay Area, with a revised event format in place which includes the championship-deciding winner-takes-all Grand Final.
As with all our other Season 2 events, there will be five fleet races and a three-team final. But what these races mean in relation to the outcome of the event has changed to ensure our Champion can be crowned and the SailGP Trophy handed to the victor once racing in San Francisco has come to an end.
// The Fleet Races
At our usual events, the event winner is the team that claims victory in the winner-takes-all Final. For the upcoming showpiece in San Francisco, the event winner will be crowned following the five Fleet Races based on which team is topping the event leaderboard. A race win is worth 8 points towards a team’s place in the event leaderboard, while second place earns 7 points descending down to 1 point for an eight place finish.
Once the event leaderboard is determined following the five Fleet Races, Championship points will be awarded using the regular scoring system (1st = 10 points, 2nd = 9 points… 8th = 3 points). These points will be added to the Season Championship leaderboard, with the top three teams in this ranking following the addition of the points qualifying for the Season 2 Grand Final.
// The Grand Final
This is a winner-takes-all shootout for the SailGP Championship with no caveats. The top three teams in the Season Championship leaderboard are involved in this clash, which is scheduled as the final race of both the United StatesSGP - and the entire campaign.
There is not much else to say about the Grand Final, other than ‘winner-takes-all’ means ‘winner-takes-all’. No matter if you finished first in the Season Championship or third in the Season Championship, if you win the Grand Final - you win the SailGP Trophy.
There’s no other way to put it - the pressure has never been higher in SailGP, and that makes the Mubadala United States Sail Grand Prix | San Francisco the perfect event to end our most thrilling season yet.
