Excitement is building ahead of the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix, which gets underway on 18-19 February against the iconic backdrop of Sydney Harbour.
Hot on the heels of last month’s first ever Singapore Sail Grand Prix, the fleet is preparing to meet again for the ninth event of Season 3’s 11-event calendar. Racing will get underway at 16:00 AEDT on Saturday and Sunday, with the league’s nine hydrofoiling catamarans doing battle just meters from shore-side spectators.
Home favorites and two-time defending champions Australia will be looking to extend their Championship lead on home waters, while Peter Burling’s New Zealand in second will be aiming to close the Aussies’ nine point lead.
Meanwhile Ben Ainslie’s Great Britain in third has just a one-point lead on Quentin Delapierre’s France in fourth.
After Sydney, SailGP will head to Christchurch for the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix on March 18-19. From there, the league will travel onto the iconic waters of San Francisco Bay as the all-important winner-takes-all Grand Final gets underway in May.
