Emirates GBR strategist Hannah Diamond reveals her dream SailGP race location and the scariest moment of her sailing career, which unfolded at SailGP’s Season 2 Grand Final in San Francisco.
How did you first get into sailing?
My parents met through sailing and my dad was a boat builder so I’ve been on the water my whole life.
What is your career highlight so far?
Having so many opportunities to learn more about myself and adapt to different situations across the breadth of the sport, from Olympic classes to Offshore Racing and now SailGP.
Who is your sporting icon and why?
Alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn for being fearless.
Tell us about your scariest sailing moment?
Season 2 in San Francisco - we had a very close call with the French and Kiwis both on port when we were on starboard coming into the leeward gate and for a moment it looked like there was no way we could all avoid each other.
What is your favorite SailGP race location and why?
Dubai was an amazing venue last year, a small racecourse confined by concrete wall boundaries and perfectly flat water.
If you could choose a new SailGP race location, where would it be?
Lake Garda, Italy.
What dream tech innovation would you introduce to the F50 if you could?
The ability to ensure race-able conditions on every race day!
If you could change anything, what would you change about SailGP?
More events, more opportunities to win and showcase our amazing sport!
Which venue are you most looking forward to visiting in Season 4 and why?
Bermuda - It’s a beautiful sailing venue and I was last there for the Gold Cup in 2018, so to be going back and racing such different boats will be fun.
Best SailGP moment so far?
Racing in Saint Tropez in Season 3 - the adrenaline rush from racing on the Saturday in 46 km/h has only just worn off!
What team would you most like to beat?
Australia.
What would you be doing if you weren’t a professional sailor?
I am a qualified physiotherapist so I’m using that knowledge to help the sailing team win SailGP!
What is your favorite thing about SailGP?
The racing is addictive and it’s so exciting to be part of.
