Canada driver Phil Robertson has predicted a ‘high chance of capsizes’ when racing gets underway in San Francisco, with high winds forecast across the weekend.
Currently sitting in fifth overall with 67 points, Canada is highly unlikely to make it into the three-boat, $2 million Grand Final.
But Robertson said ‘you never know what’s going to happen’, adding that the team is ‘standing by’ in the event of a leaderboard shake up.
“If you look at the venue, it’s going to be really windy and historically this is the venue with the most crashes and there’s a high chance of capsizes,” he said at a pre-event press conference.
“If I was a top four team I would be a little bit nervous about pushing the boat too hard out there, because you never know what’s going to happen.”
Looking ahead to the weekend, which will see the 10-strong fleet go head to head across five fleet races ahead of the Grand Final, Robertson said the team ‘know what we need to do’.
“We just need to go out and put on a good show,” he said. “This team is on the rise and this is a location which is an extremely fun place to sail - so we’re just going to be enjoying it.”
SailGP’s Season 4 Grand Final in San Francisco takes place on July 13/14, with racing from 2.30pm PDT.
