Spain driver Diego Botin has said the team is ‘getting stronger’ after trouncing season leaders New Zealand and Australia in Bermuda in a fiercely-fought three-boat Final.

Reflecting on the result, which marks the team’s second ever event win since entering the league in Season 2, Botin said beating the top teams of New Zealand and Australia was ‘an amazing feeling’.

The result means Spain solidifies its third place position on the Season 4 leaderboard, with a full nine point lead ahead of ROCKWOOL DEN in fourth. Only the top three ranked teams will proceed into the winner-takes-all Grand Final at the end of the season to fight for the Championship title.

Botin admitted he didn’t expect the team to be in this position at this point of the season, pointing to Spain’s last place finish in Season 3.

“When we started this season, we were coming in from finishing last in the last two events in our new configuration when we made all the crew changes,” he said.

He revealed that the team’s Season 4 ambition had been ‘to fight with the top teams at the end of the season and we are doing that now’.

However, he said the team ‘cannot sleep’ - or lose its competitive intensity - after Bermuda’s triumph. “Otherwise the best teams will keep getting better - we need to progress as well and just stay focused.”

Next up, the F50 fleet heads to Canada for the first time for the ROCKWOOL Canada Sail Grand Prix | Halifax on June 1/2.
