There was plenty of drama on the opening day of New York, with two different fleet race winners, tactical racing and a strong underwater current. Racing on day two will now take place earlier than initially planned due to a stormy afternoon forecast. Here’s five things to watch out for when racing resumes at 1pm ET.
Can USA improve on its first day performance?
It was a difficult first day for Taylor Canfield’s United States, which finished last in both fleet races. This means the team has now finished 10th in the last five fleet races, across both New York and Halifax. Canfield said the team would be ‘working hard to put on a better show’ for home fans - can the team turn it around on the second day of racing?
Will the wind pick up?
Challenging conditions comprising a strong current and fickle breeze played havoc with teams’ racing strategies on day one, and the last fleet race was abandoned amid dying winds. With storms forecast for this afternoon, racing has been moved earlier - could this improve conditions when racing gets back underway?
A congested leaderboard
Canada may be top of the leaderboard heading into day two, but there's only five points separating them from Spain in 7th - meaning there’s everything to play for when racing resumes. With two fleet races left to go, the pressure will be on teams to make their mark and move up the leaderboard.
Could Switzerland make their first Final?
It was a promising first day for Switzerland, with the team picking up a 6th place finish and ending with an event win. This means the team is in second overall heading into the second day of racing. Can the Swiss stay consistent and make it into their first ever event Final?
Can Canada seal their second event win?
A consistent first day for Phil Robertson’s crew - with 4-2 place finishes - see the team in first heading into day two - with 16 points. Can the Canadians master the challenging conditions to take the victory in New York?
The Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix continues at 1pm ET.
