SailGP’s highly anticipated New York return saw the fleet’s 10 national teams go head to head on the Hudson River flanked by the iconic city backdrop.

The event got off to a fiery start, with Germany picking up a four point penalty for hitting Australia in practice and the USA’s driver Taylor Canfield trading blows with Canada’s Phil Robertson in the pre-event press conference. However, it was the latter who excelled when racing got underway.

The team rose to the challenge of the fickle conditions to execute smooth maneuvers, resulting in 4th and 2nd place finishes to end the day top of the event leaderboard.

Meanwhile Giles Scott’s Emirates GBR and Switzerland picked up the race wins.

But as the wind dropped to 3.5 km/h, the final race of the day was abandoned with the conditions deemed too light to ensure a fair race.

The wind filled in for racing on day two and Canada took full advantage - picking up the race win in the third fleet race while Australia took the 4th.

The Canadians, top on fleet racing after four races, proceeded into the winner-takes-all Final alongside Peter Burling’s New Zealand and Scott’s Emirates GBR.

But it was the Kiwis which secured the best start when the Final began, winning the inside line and placing first at Mark 1.

From there, the team pulled away, leaving Canada and Emirates GBR to scrap over second and third respectively.

The triumph marked New Zealand’s fifth event win of the season and means the Kiwis have already qualified for next month’s Grand Final in San Francisco.
