Former Emirates GBR driver Giles Scott is to replace Phil Robertson as driver of the Canadian team following news of the team’s sale.
Scott’s move to the Canadian team is set to cause shockwaves through the league. Scott, who holds a Canadian passport, previously took over from former Emirates GBR driver Ben Ainslie to drive the British F50 for seven events last season. This included driving the British team to victory at the league’s debut event in Canada and a podium finish in New York.
Scott, who was born in the UK but grew up sailing on the Ottawa River, described securing the win in Halifax as ‘an unforgettable experience’.
“I’m really looking forward to representing Canada at the highest level of our sport in this upcoming season (…) – the energy of Canadian fans was like no other,” he said. “Canada has already proven to be a competitive force, and I’m determined to build on that success with a talented crew beside me.”
Emirates GBR has not yet announced who will take over its own driver role in the upcoming 2024/25 Season.
Scott’s appointment accompanies the news that the team has retained flight controller Billy Gooderham, wing trimmer Paul Campbell-James, as well as grinders Tim Hornsby, Jareese Finch, Cooper Dressler and Tom Ramshaw.
Strategist Annie Haeger will also continue with the team and be joined by Georgia Lewin-LaFrance, who returns to the roster following her 2024 Olympic campaign.
It comes as the private sale of the team was confirmed to biotech entrepreneur, Dr. Greg Bailey. SailGP also announced the return of a Canada SailGP event in 2026.
