Maria IWD

Can you share with us your journey into the world of tech and how you became involved with SailGP?

I became involved with SailGP due to my broadcast background. I have worked in live sports broadcasting for the past 12 years, having worked on the biggest sports in the UK such as English Premier League and Champions League. I also have a particular passion for sailing, it's the sport I grew up competing in and it's also the sport that introduced me to sports production.

What does your day to day look like over an event weekend? What are the specific roles and responsibilities you undertake within SailGP?

I'm Director of Production at SailGP. I am responsible for the running of SailGP Productions, I manage all the logistics, facilities, budget and crewing of over 150 people during the events which include the live broadcast, digital and content teams.

As a woman working in a predominantly male-dominated industry, what challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?

I grew up competing in the male-dominated sport of sailing, and always competed on the same playing field as my male counterparts. I was bought up to believe that I can achieve anything and my gender was never considered a barrier.

In your opinion, what unique perspectives or strengths do women bring to the world of sport and to SailGP in particular?

I think all sports need an equal perspective from all genders and backgrounds, I see this as an opportunity for SailGP to grow and inspire future generations.

How do you envision the future of women's involvement and leadership roles within SailGP and the broader sailing community, and what steps do you believe are necessary to continue promoting gender equity and diversity in the sport?

SailGP plays an important role in it's continued promotion of the Women's Pathway by providing equal opportunities to compete on the F50 not matter what gender. I would love to see a female driver in the not too distant future as I greatly believe this will inspire younger girls who are looking at a future in the sport.

Who inspires you within your life?

I don't really have one individual who inspires me, I have a good support network.
