New Zealand’s triumphant Christchurch victory, which propelled them to the top of the leaderboard, has resulted in fans backing the team to deliver their 5th event win of the season in Bermuda.
The Kiwis picked up a resounding 34.7% of the fan vote, while 22.5% backed Tom Slingsby’s Australia, currently in second overall, to win on The Great Sound.
It comes after the Aussies suffered a catastrophic event in Christchurch. Slingsby’s team was docked a devastating 10 season points and 12 event points for colliding with a race mark, causing significant damage to their F50.
This, combined with New Zealand’s win, resulted in the Aussies dropping to second overall - nine points clear of the Kiwis’ lead.
Phil Robertson’s Canada - which podiumed at last season’s visit to Bermuda - was voted third most likely to win this weekend’s event, with 16.3% of the vote.
Giles Scott’s Emirates GBR - which also received a bruising penalty for clashing with Spain in Christchurch - received the backing of 14.3% of fans, while 10.2% backed France. Spain, currently third on the overall Season 4 leaderboard, only picked up 2% of the vote.
