SailGP is set to return to the waters of Canada to stage an event in 2026, the league has confirmed.
The news came as SailGP announced the sale of the team to biotech entrepreneur Dr Greg Bailey, which secures the team’s spot on the SailGP racetrack. The league will return to the region in the 2026 season, following the upcoming 2024/25 Season.
SailGP’s Canadian debut in Halifax last season was a sellout success. The event was named fans’ ‘favorite racetrack’ and saw more than 50,000 spectators cheer on their home team from the Halifax shoreline.
Giles Scott - who will replace outgoing driver Phil Robertson at the beginning of next season - welcomed the league’s return to Canada, describing the ‘energy of Canadian fans’ as ‘like no other’.
“The town absolutely lit up for everything SailGP - the Canadian fans were amazing, they loved it and the conditions were unreal as well,” he said.
Scott, who drove the British team to victory in Halifax, looked forward to returning to the country at the wheel of the home team.
“I’m biased because we won the event last season, but it’s going to be seriously cool,” he said. “Halifax was an amazing event - the fan favorite event of the season.”
Canada is the second of new teams and ownership to be confirmed ahead of the start of the new season following the announcement of the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team.
The 14-event 2024/25 Season will kick off in Dubai on November 23/25.
