Tom Slingsby’s Australia consistently picked up the highest Mark 1 ranking throughout Season 4's fleet racing and increased this to rack up the highest finishing position of the fleet.

Data provided by the F50 fleet across fleet racing shows Slingsby’s team picked up an average Mark 1 position of 4.2 across the 13-event season, which increased by an average of 0.54 places to finish at 3.7.

France had the second highest Mark 1 position - an average of 4.6 - but lost an average of 0.51 positions on the way to the finish line - resulting in an average finish of 5.1.

The Kiwis meanwhile had the third highest Mark 1 position of the fleet - an average of 4.7, but gained an average of 0.88 places on the way to the finish line. The team improved its Mark 1 position more than any other team by an average of 0.88 places, performing a total of 70 overtakes throughout the season. This resulted in an average finishing position of 3.8, just behind the Aussies.

Emirates GBR were the biggest overtakers of the season meanwhile, performing a total of 80 overtakes throughout fleet racing to improve its average Mark 1 position of 5 to an average finishing position of 4.3.

Conversely, at the other end of the spectrum, Switzerland had the lowest Mark 1 position, the lowest number of overtakes and the lowest finishing position of the fleet.

The Swiss’s average Mark 1 position of 6 worsened as the races wore on, dropping by an average of 1.13 places to pick up an average finishing position of 7.2. Sebastien Schneiter’s crew also performed the least amount of overtakes - just 22 across the season.

The other teams to lose positions on their Mark 1 rankings were the United States, Germany and France, with the same teams performing 33, 36 and 45 overtakes respectively.

Interestingly, eventual season champions Spain had one of the lowest Mark 1 positions of the fleet - an average of 5.4 - just ahead of Germany’s 5.9 and Switzerland’s 6.

But Spain was able to improve this position by an average of 0.69 places throughout the race, resulting in an average fleet finishing position of 4.7. The Spanish were also one of the top overtakers of the fleet, passing a total of 79 boats throughout the season’s fleet racing.
