Switzerland has taken the title as the most penalized team of the F50 fleet for the second season in a row.

Sebastien Schneiter’s team, which was driven by former Japan driver Nathan Outteridge for four events, racked up a total of 33 penalties across the 13-event season, comprising boundary, early start and Part 2 (boat on boat) penalties.

Season 4 // Switzerland nosedive in Saint Tropez

The team received a total of 33 penalties in these categories - 8 more than Erik Heil’s Germany, which came in second with 25. Phil Robertson’s Canada meanwhile came in third with 21 penalties.

Season 4 // Canada and ROCKWOOL DEN miss the finish line in fleet race 2 in San Francisco

Switzerland’s penalty breakdown saw the team pick up 15 boundary penalties (these punish teams for straying outside of course boundaries), four early start penalties and 14 Part 2 (boat on boat) penalties.

Germany meanwhile received nine boundary, six early start and 10 Part 2 penalties.

At the bottom end of the table, Emirates GBR, driven by both Ben Ainslie and Giles Scott in Season 4, was the least penalized team of the fleet - picking up just 9 penalties across 13 events. The team was handed one Part 2 penalty, three early start penalties and five boundary penalties.

Season 4 // New Zealand, Emirates GBR, France and Germany teams in close quarter racing in Bermuda

ROCKWOOL DEN was just above Emirates GBR, receiving one more infraction than the British team.

However, it was a different story when it came to the amount of points lost for serious offenses.

Canada picked up a 16 event point deduction for two separate dramatic incidents, warranting the removal of 8 event points each. The first saw Phil Robertson’s team docked four season points and eight event points for dramatically colliding with Spain on the first day of racing in Saint-Tropez.

The second resulted in the removal of another four season points and eight event points for hitting a finish line mark on the first day of racing Season 4’s Grand Final in San Francisco.

Season 4 // Australia crash into race mark in Christchurch

Australia and France meanwhile both picked up 12 penalty points apiece - Australia for hitting a race mark in Christchurch and causing significant damage to the team’s F50 - and France for colliding with ROCKWOOL DEN in the fourth fleet race of San Francisco as the team pushed to beat Spain to the Grand Final.

Emirates GBR and ROCKWOOL DEN were both handed 8 penalty points across the season - both for incidents in Christchurch. Emirates GBR dramatically collided with Spain in training before ROCKWOOL DEN “T-boned” the Canadian F50 on the start line of the first fleet race - breaking off a part of their own bow in the process.

Switzerland, Germany and Spain meanwhile were all handed 4 penalty points for separate incidents, while the USA and New Zealand were the only teams to finish the season with 0.

SailGP also measures the number of protests lodged by respective boats (teams alert the umpires to on-water incidents to establish if a foul has been committed). Canada protested the most against other teams, hitting the protest button 56 times, followed by New Zealand and France, which both protested 50 times each. Spain was the team which protested the least meanwhile - lodging just 29 complaints across the season.
