New Zealand grinder Marcus Hansen had a bumpy start to racing in New York after flipping overboard shortly before the start of Race Day 1.

The moment unfolded after teams were initially told to reduce their crews to five people on board amid light wind conditions.

The team began warming up with strategist Liv Mackay in the second grinder position. Hansen meanwhile was sitting in the strategist position before being dropped off to a chase boat.

After crossing the boat, Hansen suddenly lost his balance and flipped overboard - but remained attached to the F50 thanks to his safety tether. Hansen climbed back on board and was unharmed by the incident.
