More than 15,000 players raced to qualify for eSailGP Grand Final

LONDON – May 7, 2020 – Despite the SailGP teams not being able to compete in San Francisco, the iconic venue was still put to the test with more than 15,000 players battling it out on a virtual San Francisco racecourse in the fourth event of the eSailGP 2020 Championship. Winning gamer HAVUC from Turkey was the eventual victor, beating Yasirmb of Spain in the final match race to take the title and earn his place in the eSailGP Grand Final on August 14.

Competing on eF50s – the world’s fastest sail race boats in a virtual environment – a total of 6,268 races took place over the event, clocking up a cumulative race time of 367 days, with gamer Stipecoach (Croatia) racing 173 times alone to make the live final.

The live final comprised of three fleet races, with eight esports athletes taking part, two of whom were elevated to the final as two competitors had already qualified for the Grand Final – Spain SailGP Team member Joan Cardona and Cruzolator. Among the finalists was fellow Spanish SailGP Team member Joel Rodriguez.

HAVUC, who had previously failed to make the qualifier final on three occasions so far this season, finally got his revenge, not only placing in the final but also winning the match race convincingly after Yasirmb received a penalty for starting prematurely.

HAVUC said: “It was fantastic to make the final after three previous attempts. I have been struggling so far this season, so I am really happy to win the San Francisco eSailGP and finally see the hard work pay off. I am now really looking forward to the Grand Final in August.”

Launched in partnership with Virtual Regatta and World Sailing, the championship features seven qualification events over the course of the season, with each respective winner clinching a spot in the eSailGP Grand Final. The winner of the eSailGP Grand Final not only gets automatic qualification to the eSailing World Championship, but also a ride onboard an F50 in real life.
