Different Types of SailGP Odds
Just like with a football match or a Formula One race, there isn’t just one thing to bet on when it comes to a SailGP event, there are many. Part of the trick is knowing how the different betting markets work so you can decide which one or ones suit your betting style best. Here are the main ones.
Championship Odds
At the heart of the SailGP season is the Championship table. There are points and prize money up for grabs for each event and each race within the event. All the teams are ultimately trying to pick up as many points as possible in each event so they can finish in the top 3 of the regular season and qualify for the season grand finale. The winner of that is the winner of the Championship.
After each event, the bookies will update their odds for each team’s perceived chances of going on to win the Championship, based on the most recent set of results from the event just gone.
Whereas betting on the Championship winner keeps you engaged for the remainder of the season, it’s also true that tying your money up for months won’t be for anyone.
Race Odds
In SailGP, weather permitting, there are normally seven races per event, plus Sunday’s final.
In most cases, bookies only lay odds on Race 1 and Race 2 on the Saturday and then again for Races 5 and 6 on the Sunday, plus the event final.
Bookies calculate odds based on the teams’ recent form, their past results at a particular event, and other factors such as weather conditions or whether a team has a key crew member missing due to injury or another reason.
One of the nice things about betting on an individual race is that if you pick the winner, your money will be paid out to you as soon as the race is over.
To win the Final
‘To win the final’ is another way of saying ‘who will win the event’?
This betting market is made available before the event gets underway, with the odds being updated after each of the Fleet Races as the bookies have a better idea of who might finish in the top 3 and qualify for that event’s final.
To Reach the Final
Rather than just predicting which team will win the event’s final, this market asks which three teams will reach it. You can choose to pick just one team in this market, two, or three.
As a result of that, it’s a three-winner market rather than a one-winner market because there are obviously three teams that qualify for it. Also, as a result of that, the odds on a team making the final are considerably shorter than they are on the team to actually win it.
Head-to-Head Bets
A head-to-head SailGP bet means that you’re just betting on who will finish best among two teams.
That could relate to an individual fleet race or to the event as a whole. So if, for example, the market was Emirates Team GBR v The BONDS Flying Roos Event Points and you backed Emirates GBR at 2.1, you’d need them to finish with more event points than the Australians.
It doesn’t matter how they compare to the other teams; you’d just need them to finish above the Aussies.
Where to Find SailGP Odds
Bad news: not all bookies around the world will offer odds on the SailGP Championship the same way they will on Wimbledon or the Champions League. But some do, and plenty more will in the future as betting interest in it continues to grow.
Then again, even if a bookie does, that bookie may not necessarily accept customers from the country you live in.
But now to the good news: one of the bookies that does offer SailGP betting is Bet365, a Sportsbook that accepts customers from well over 100 countries worldwide, including the UK, Australia, Spain, Italy, and the US (some states only).
So the smart money is on Bet365 accepting customers in your country so you can bet on SailGP. Even if it doesn’t, hopefully another bookie will.
How to Read SailGP Odds
Different bookmakers display odds in different ways, and that mostly depends on the country they’re operating in.
Most European betting sites display odds in decimal format. In the US, they almost always use American odds (no surprise there!), while these days UK betting sites use a combination of fractional and decimal odds. No countries outside the UK and Ireland tend to use fractional odds anymore.
Then again, many bookies allow you to choose how you want the odds displayed; there will normally be a drop-down menu on the homepage giving you the chance to choose whether you want to see odds in decimal, fractional, or American format.
Failing that, there are odds converter websites that will easily allow you to do just that: convert odds from one format to the next.
Just as an example, decimal odds of 3.0 (you win twice the value of your stake plus your Stake Back) would be displayed as follows in other formats:
- Fractional: 2/1
- American: +200
How to Find Value in SailGP Odds
The novice punter may decide that their best route to success is to back the teams who have historically been most successful: the BONDS Flying Roos, Los Gallos SailGP Team, Emirates GBR, or the Black Foils SailGP Team, also giving some consideration to recent results or how they’ve performed in that particular location in the past.
But if you want to take things to the next level, you need to consider other factors such as the wind conditions.
The Australians have been known to be almost unbeatable in strong winds, so the value bet may be to side with them, even if it’s just at odds of 3.0.
But the real secret to success is to side with less-fancied teams at far bigger odds because those unique conditions may suit them.
A good example of that is how the unfancied and underrated US SailGP Team, excellent in much lighter winds, won the 2026 KMPG Sydney Sail Grand Prix at odds of 60.0. The real experts will have seen the opportunity in that price based on the conditions.
SailGP odds FAQs
- 🌍 Where can I bet on SailGP events?
A fair few betting sites around the world offer wagering on SailGP, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll let you open an account with them. For example, SailGP bookie Bet365 doesn’t accept customers from Portugal, so if you live in Portugal, you’ll have to find another bookie that a) has SailGP betting and b) accepts Portugal-based customers.
- 🏆 What’s the most common SailGP bet?
The race winner market and the event winner market (sometimes also known as “to win the final”) are two of the most popular bets to place on SailGP, as they’re two of the most straightforward. In the case of the first one, you’re wagering on which team will win the named race, whereas with the second, you’re betting on who will go on to win the event’s final, which is the same thing as winning the event itself. Each-way betting is rarely seen outside the Championship winner market.
- ⚖️ What changes SailGP odds?
Several outside factors can affect the odds, including weather and wind conditions, current team form, and injuries. Changes to a crew lineup can also cause prices to shift, so staying updated with the latest news is important. As with the handicap betting examples covered in our other guides, it’s a concept that’s fairly straightforward once you become familiar with how it works.
