Cowes, Isle of Wight, is the home of yachting and sailing in the UK and will host the penultimate event in SailGP Season 1.
Cowes SailGP has formed an exciting partnership with Cowes Week and will be an official feature event for their opening weekend of August 10/11 2019.
This new, annual global sports championship will take centre stage in the Solent and promises to deliver thrilling racing for the competitors and fans alike. As the home of UK sailing, fans will be out in force, both ashore and afloat, to support the home team, which features some of the best young Olympic talent in the country.
The Cowes SailGP Race Village will run along the seafront from the end of the Cowes Green up to Egypt Point. This will be the focal point for watching the action, with giant screens and live commentary, sports presentations featuring the sailing teams, plus lots of amazing event content and exhibits, food and drinks. The racing will take place just off Egypt Point, with a safety exclusion zone created on the water, around which spectator’s afloat can watch the action.
The Solent, the body of water between the Isle of Wight and the south coast of England, is going to test the six national teams as its notoriously fickle. Atlantic weather systems, strong tides and shifting sandbanks make for challenging navigation and sailing conditions and will test the world-class tacticians to their limits.
The legendary Cowes Week started back in 1924 and is one of the biggest regattas in the world today with 10,000 competitors and over 100,000 spectators enjoying the week-long festivities.
