Graeme Sutherland was born in Edmonton, Canada and moved to New Zealand at a young age where his passion for sailing flourished within its strong national sailing culture. The Sutherland family grew up on the water. It was cruising and ocean voyages around Auckland and the Pacific, typical of Kiwi families, which inspired his life long passion for the sport.
Graeme’s sailing career began in the RNZYS youth sailing squad and while working as a young sailmaker. From there, he progressed to competing on the international circuit including sailing with K-Challenge towards the 32nd America’s Cup, as well as competing in the RC44, Farr 40 and Melges 32 Classes. Graeme began focusing on foiling in 2016 and went on to compete in the International Moth Championships, Nacra 20 & 17 and the GC32 Extreme Sailing Series. Sutherland also coached the NZ Women's Olympic Match Racing Team and is actively involved in developing youth sailing.
Graeme is a competitive paddle athlete and kite surfer, while his brother Logan is a professional kite racer campaigning to represent Canada in the Paris Olympics. Graeme is married and has two young children who are keen ocean advocates and will be travelling with the team throughout Season 3.
