Youth
Tom started sailing when he was 8 years old at the Stony Lake Yacht Club, near his cottage. He began competing in the summers around Ontario when he was 12. As a youth, Tom won the Ontario High School Championship and the Ontario Gold Cup circuit, as well as playing hockey competitively along with a variety of other high-school sports.

Career
In 2011 Tom began to sail full-time and the following year he qualified for the Canadian Sailing Team competing in the Laser Class. In 2015, Tom made the switch to Finn and within the first-year sailing Finn, Tom won the North American Championships, finished top ten at both the European and World Championships, and qualified to compete in the 2016 Olympics.

Tom continued sailing Finn until 2021 when the class was excluded from the Olympic Sailing program. During that time, he had many top ten finishes including 5th at the 2018 World Championships and 10th at the 2020 Olympics.

Tom was also awarded 2018 Canadian Rolex Sailor of the Year.
