Ed Powys has been immersed in the professional yacht racing scene since the age of 7, as both of his parents worked for America’s Cup teams and round the world race campaigns and even met this way.
At 10, Powys was asked to sail with a student match racing team and from then on, his pathway into competitive sailing was paved. Although at one point it looked like football might sway him away.
Powy’s career to date has seen him compete in the Olympic 49er class, the World Match Race Tour and the Extreme Sailing Series. He was signed to the British team for the 35th America’s Cup. The highlight of which was winning the America's Cup World Series, as tactician, in front of a huge home crowd.
The water is a big draw for Ed and when he’s not sailing, he is travelling with his surf board, looking for remote spots to ride the perfect wave.
“SailGP is exactly what modern day sport should be - intense, physical, technical, and lighting fast. The heart-stopping action is sure to capture the interest of the general public and sailing fans, and has the potential to elevate the popularity of sailing to new levels.”
