Paul Campbell-James, or ‘CJ’ as he is better known, started sailing aged 5, and two years later was taking part in his first races. His first success came at 12 when he won the Optimist Nationals. Since then he has gone on to compete in a number of sailing classes and disciplines around the globe including the Olympic 49er, World Match Racing Tour, Optimist World Championships and the Extreme Sailing Series.
Campbell-James has a wealth of knowledge in foiling catamarans. The four-time national match racing champion was one of the helmsman for the 2013 America’s Cup with the Italian team ‘Luna Rossa’. From there, he joined the British America’s Cup team for the 35th edition, in the role of wing trimmer. Here he sailed with team mate Ed Powys, who he came up the youth ranks with, reunited for the America’s Cup and now for SailGP.
When not sailing, he enjoys being a father to his 3-year-old girl. Never far from the water, he also enjoys kitesurfing and most other water-sports.
I am really enjoying being involved with SailGP and the China Team. SailGP is one of the major sailing events in the world and in time could become the biggest, so it’s really exciting to be part of it.
