Francesco Bruni joins Japan SailGP Team for Season 2, following his recent America's Cup campaign with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, with who, he co-helmed the Challenger of Record alongside United States SailGP Team helmsman Jimmy Spithill.
He joins Japan as flight controller and hopes to add to his impressive trophy cabinet by winning the SailGP championship.
Palermo-born Bruni has been a professional sailor for nearly three decades, starting in the sport when he was 20 years old. He has competed in the Olympic Games on three different occasions, all in different classes; he started in a Laser in 1996 before moving to the 49er four years later and then the Star class in 2004.
He has competed in five America’s Cup campaigns, with four of those appearances representing Luna Rossa, whom he co-helmed with United States SailGP Team helmsman Jimmy Spithill in the 36th America’s Cup in early 2021.
Throughout his lengthy sailing career, Bruni has won eight World, five European and 15 Italian Championships.
Away from sailing, the 48-year-old Bruni is married and has two children.
