Wakako Kajimoto joins the Japan SailGP Team for Season 2 alongside Sena Takano. Each athlete will participate in three events during different stages of the season, with Kajimoto scheduled to appear in Bermuda, Italy and the United Kingdom. One of the two will then be selected for the final events of the season.
Kajimoto started sailing at the age of eight on an Optimist. She finished 3rd in the 1998 European Championships girls’ ranking, and then won the girls’ Japanese national title in the same year.
She sailed a range of classes over the following years and won several national titles in the Frying Junior class and Yamaha Seahopper class before stepping up to 470 class. During 11 years of campaigning in the class, she won a couple of World Cup events, reached 1st place in the ISAF world ranking, and also represented Japan at 2012 Olympic Games in London in which she and her helmsman Ai Kondo Yoshida finished 14th.
Since then she has been sailing Nacra 17, International Moth and Laser Radial, and she narrowly missed out on the final national selection for the 2020 Olympics.
When she is free from competitive dinghy sailing, Kajimoto enjoys wing foiling or playing video games.
