Growing up in rural New Zealand, Liv Mackay’s relationship with the ocean started at the age of nine, learning to sail at Napier Sailing Club. Moving to Auckland to pursue an Olympic Campaign in the Nacra 17 class, Liv has won the U23 World Champs, RedBull Foiling Generation and completed a degree in Accounting and International Business.
Liv joined the New Zealand SailGP Team in 2019 following a women’s invitational which saw six of New Zealand’s best compete for a spot with the Kiwi crew during their inaugural SailGP season. Liv has been a key member of the team since, racing throughout the last two seasons in the role of Strategist or ‘helm assist.’ Liv has been integral to event wins in Plymouth, Denmark and Singapore.
In 2022, Liv took up the role of Skipper for the Live Ocean Racing Team, leading a stellar line up of Kiwi talent on their first-ever campaign, the 2022 ETF26 Grand Prix - a five-event foiling series based in France and Italy. A proud ocean champion representing Live Ocean on the world stage, Liv is currently skippering the team on their second ETF campaign.
