Iago López Marra joined the global sail racing championship after having competed on the sport’s grandest stages – from the Olympics, to world and European championships – bringing valuable experience that will help guide the Spain SailGP Team in its debut season.
Growing up in northwest Spain, he began sailing at a young age and steadily began to rise through the ranks in a variety of classes. His career breakthrough came when he joined the High Performance Sailing Center in Santander and met his current Olympic helm and Spain SailGP teammate Diego Botin.
For López Marra, 2016 marked a monumental year in his career as he earned the gold medal at the world and European championships in the 49er class and competed in his first-ever Olympic Games in Rio, finishing in ninth place alongside Botin. The pair will represent Spain again in Tokyo in 2021.
He repeated as world champion in 2017 and the European gold medalist in 2018. In 2019, he earned a fourth-place finish in the 49er class at the world championship and took the bronze medal at the European competition.
López Marra has also been a member of Spanish Impulse, a group with a focus on the Olympics and developing athletes in high-performance boats.
Marra has a degree in naval engineering and a passion for foiling – spending any spare time on or above the water.
