Iago López Marra joins the global championship having competed on the sport’s grandest stages – from the Olympics, to world and European championships – bringing valuable experience that will help guide the Spain SailGP Team in its debut year.
Growing up in northwest Spain, he began sailing at a young age and steadily began to rise through the ranks in a variety of classes. His career breakthrough came when he joined the High Performance Sailing Center in Santander and met his current Olympic helm and Spain SailGP teammate Diego Botín.
For Marra, 2016 marked a monumental year in his career as he earned the gold medal at the world and European championships in the 49er class, and competed in his first-ever Olympic Games in Rio, finishing in ninth place alongside Botín. The pair hope to represent Spain again this summer in Tokyo.
Marra has a degree in Naval Engineering and a passion for foiling – spending any spare time on or above the water.
“When I watched the first SailGP event last year, I wondered if Spain would be part of that championship one day. That day has arrived! I believe that the whole team has the necessary ability and the right attitude so that Spain is represented as best it can be.”
