Luis “Bugui” Bugallo grew up on the coast of northwest Spain, sailing an Optimist at his local yacht club in Vigo where he laid the foundation for his sailing career, while also studying for an engineering degree.
Throughout his youth, he trained in a variety of boats and his diverse experience makes him a valuable member of the Spain SailGP Team in its debut campaign.
Bugallo competed with Spanish Impulse for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017 and competed on the GC32 foiling catamaran curcuit. In 2018, he skippered a J70 at the World and European Championships, winning the Corinthian division.
“SailGP is a great spectacle on the water. The grandstands are by the shore, the boats race next to the spectators, it’s like being in a stadium. I think that we will succeed in presenting the sport of sailing to a Spanish public that is not familiar with the sport. It will be a true success!”
