Victor Diaz de Leon serves as Wing Trimmer for the United States SailGP Team, joining the set-up midway through Season 4 ahead of the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix presented by P&O Marinas.
Growing up in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, Diaz de Leon started sailing at a young age on his father’s racer cruiser. At the age of seven, his father got him an Optimist and he quickly devoted all of his time and energy into the sport.
After high school, Diaz de Leon moved to America to pursue sailing as a career given his passion for the sport, eventually ending up at St. Mary’s College of Maryland where he was a member of the school’s sailing team.
Diaz de Leon specializes in small keelboat tactics and single-handed Moth sailing, having twice finished in the top-10 in the Moth world championships. Over the past several years, he has been a fixture at the top of the leaderboard in the J70 and Etchells classes.
While he is not sailing, Diaz de Leon enjoys free diving, fishing, surfing and anything else that involves the water.
