Regarded as one of the finest professional sailors of his generation, Victor Diaz de Leon will serve as a reserve wing trimmer and flight controller during his first season with the United States SailGP Team. He will play an integral role in analyzing the team’s performance while growth the depth of experience in the highly technical wing control systems.

Youth
Growing up in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, he started sailing at a young age on his father’s racer cruiser. At the age of seven, his father got him an Optimist and he quickly devoted all of his time and energy into the sport.

After high school, Diaz de Leon moved to America to pursue sailing as a career given his passion for the sport, eventually ending up at St. Mary’s College of Maryland where he was a member of the school’s sailing team.

Career
Diaz de Leon specializes in small keelboat tactics and single-handed Moth sailing, having twice finished in the top-10 in the Moth world championships. Over the past several years, he has been a fixture at the top of the leaderboard in the J70 and Etchells classes.

Personal
While he is not sailing, Diaz de Leon enjoys free diving, fishing, surfing and anything else that involves the water.
